Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé
2016 Musigny "Vieilles Vignes" Grand Cru,
Domaine Comte de Vogüé
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
The 2016 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru was damaged 70% by the frost: a significant proportion of the entire Grand Cru given that Comte de Vogüé owns most of it. Matured in 30% new oak, it has a broody bouquet that is not as immediate as the Bonnes Mares at the moment, in fact, you would think there is a small amount of stem addition even though there is nary a stem. The word that springs to mind nosing this Musigny is "rocky," maybe basalt? The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. There is plenty of blackberry and wild strawberry fruit infused with minerals that segue into a strict and correct finish that leaves you with a persistent stony aftertaste. It is more of a cerebral than sensual Musigny, one that will require eight to ten years in bottle. I was not quite captured by this Musigny but I suspect that it will show better once in bottle.
John Gilman: 97/100
If the Bonnes-Mares was a reluctant host in November, the 2016 Musigny “Vieilles Vignes” was delighted to have visitors! This is a great wine in the making, with the bouquet wafting from the glass in a very promising blend of black cherries, black raspberries, raw cocoa, complex minerality, a touch of blood orange, woodsmoke, incipient notes of gamebird and a deft base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and sappy at the core, with gorgeous focus and balance, outstanding backend mineral drive, fine-grained tannins and a long, vibrant and ripely tannic finish. This will be a great wine in the fullness of time. (Drink between 2032-2100)
Decanter:
This year’s Musigny is fabulous, unfolding in the glass with a deep and complex bouquet of red and black cherry, pomegranate, liquorice, dried roses and rich soil tones. On the palate the wine is very full-bodied, fine-grained and multidimensional, with a deep core of cool, vibrant fruit, a stony chassis of tannins, and lovely length and persistence. This was still quite primary at the end of October 2017 and shows a reserve that suggests this will need extended cellaring before it hits its peak. Drinking Window 2030 - 2060.
