Musigny , Grand Cru

Domaine G. Roumier

2002 Musigny Grand Cru AOC, Domaine Georges Roumier

Wine Spectator:
Flamboyant and powerful, with loads of coffee, smoke, black cherry and mineral, but the fruit keeps on coming, revealing intensity and depth on the full-bodied yet refined frame. Excellent sense of place. The finish evokes finesse and breeding. Best from 2010 through 2025.

Allen Meadows - Burghoun: 95/100
It's quite clear in hindsight that I was a good deal too conservative in my initial impression of this wine as the high toast influence that it displayed initially (see Issue 13 or the database for details) has been completely absorbed to better reveal a high-toned floral and spicy black fruit nose which leads to rich, full and sweet flavors that seamlessly merge into a finish of striking depth and superb concentration underpinned by very ripe and suave tannins. Like its '02 Bonnes Mares stable mate, this is truly a fantastic effort that should age brilliantly as it is already a multi-dimensional wine. Drink: 2017+

Stephen Tanzer's:
Good full, bright, deep red, the darkest of these 2002s. Musky aromas of raspberry, blueberry, espresso and toasty oak; less floral today than the Bonnes-Mares. Superrich and deeply pitched, with flavors of blueberry, violet, licorice and earth. Dense but juicy, with terrific cut. Lush and smooth wine with strong material. Finishes with substantial oak spice and outstanding persistence. This started in a new 350-liter barrel, but Roumier racked it into one and a half barrels of used oak because he thought the wine was getting too toasty.
